Ardeer Community Care Units
Location: Ardeer Sector: Social Housing Completion: 2015
The Ardeer Community Care Unit, part of Victoria’s Family Violence Housing program and designed by Y2 Architecture, serves as more than just shelter—it is a sanctuary for families in crisis. Livability is prioritised through flexible accommodations ranging from one to three bedrooms, tailored to diverse family profiles.
Guided by principles of community planning, every decision, from ensuring privacy and security through thoughtful zoning to integrating sustainable features like double-glazed windows and low-maintenance landscaping, was meticulously considered. The challenging, contoured site was creatively addressed through tiers and ramps, enhancing both natural beauty and functionality.
Central to its design are themes of well-being and belonging, achieved through carefully selected colors and materials. Communal spaces such as a hall, BBQ area, and children’s play space with separated age-appropriate zones foster community and normalcy, encouraging social interaction and mutual support among residents.
The success of the Ardeer Community Care Unit project lies not only in its functional design but also in its profound impact on residents’ well-being, providing a sense of belonging during times of crisis. This project exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can positively transform lives, offering a safe haven that embodies both quality and compassion.
