Peter Tonkin is a steadfast Senior Project Architect, based in Victoria, Australia. Currently, he is engaged as the Associate Director and Senior Project Architect at Y2Architecture, an industry leader in architecture, interior and urban design for over forty years. For the past decade, Peter has worked persistently to deliver projects in excess of $80million, to enhance the livability of one of the worlds’ most loved cities – Melbourne.

Peter is a Member of the Australian Institute of Architects and achieved a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Melbourne a few ‘moons’ ago. Renowned for his longevity and leadership, Peter has chartered a diverse career in the industry from Darwin, to Singapore, to Melbourne. Over the past thirty-five years, he has honed his design and directorial skills across several settings, including education, government, commercial and residential. As a result, Peter has gained a reputation for his diverse expertise and versatility, both as an Architect and as a Team Leader.

A confident communicator, Peter liaises assertively with design consultants, regulatory authorities and building companies. He offers industry insight to achieve innovative and practical design and construction solutions for his clients. At Y2Architecutre, Peter’s multifaceted role encompasses managing the documentation team, performing detailed building design work, coordinating input from engineering consultants, working extensively with client user groups, and administering building contracts between owners and builders.

Peter leads his team by example – through a committed, client-focused approach. Working collaboratively, he is appreciated by his colleagues for his unflappable nature and his steady, solution-based process. Peter maintains that, ‘Quality outcomes are the direct result of collaborative planning, preparation and a dash of foresight’.

Peter enjoys being witness to the excitement and gratification of the users of a completed development, particularly theatre projects in schools. Buildings such as Scotch College Music and Drama Theatre, Ulumbarra Theatre, Williamstown High School Centenary Theatre hold a special place in his heart, as he knows that his design and development contribution will ignite creativity, connection and community.

When he is not helping clients turn concepts into construction, he is probably outdoors and enjoying the natural world any way he can – cycling, bushwalking, or conquering cross country skiing. His real guilty pleasure, however, is something that combines all these interests – travelling in exotic parts of the world with a camera!
