CEFPI 2014

Deakin Trade Training Centre was awarded CEFPI Winner of Category 2 New Major Facility in the Victorian Region 2014.

Juror's Commenets:

"Mildura Senior College is a co-educational school for Year 11 and 12 students in Mildura, North West Victoria. It is home to the Deakin Trade Training Centre, which is a joint initiative of 12 schools to centralise training opportunities in building and construction, furniture and cabinet making, automotive engineering, electro tech, avionics and hospitality, and celebrate trade training. The facility demonstrates realisation of strong engagement with an extremely diverse local community throughout the development process.

This award acknowledges Y2 Architecture's successful delivery of a building that is a celebration of trade training. Designed around a soaring central gallery the design of the Deakin Trade Training Centre masterfully integrates learning settings for theory and practice. On one side of the gallery is a commercial kitchen and two design and technology suites, on the other side are interconnected workshops for the other trades. The workshops are designed to encourage collaboration and sharing of materials and equipment between trades. Extensive internal glazing is used to maintain visual connections between learning settings where the presence of noise and dust demand separate spaces. Strong indoor/outdoor connections are created between the workshops and outdoor project bays and between the kitchen and associated kitchen garden.

The overwhelming strength of this design is in the statement it makes about trade training as a dynamic and exciting educational pathway. Y2 Architecture's use of bold colours, timber, metal and glass throughout this building create an inviting and ยท engaging learning environment. The building has a striking presence that draws the community's attention to the facility, and thus to the opportunities provided for trade training."
